What’s the deal with ghee? Is it really better than butter? Should you be eating it? Ghee is similar to clarified butter in that it is cooked down and the the milk solids are strained out. Ghee takes it a step further and cooks the butter down at a lower temperature for a much longer period giving ghee that darker color and nuttier flavor. Ghee has been used in healing for centuries in Ayurvedic practices. Because the milk sugars and proteins have been removed it can sometimes be suitable for those with dairy sensitivities as the pastors and casein has been removed. Because the ghee is a pure butterfat it has a much higher smoke point than regular butter and is great for sautéing, and can be a great option to replace other more inflammatory oils. 🐄 good source of medium chain fatty acids which are absorbed in the liver and can be used for energy.

Ghee is a great anti-inflammatory addition for most people to increase your intake of fat soluble vitamins and minerals without the allergenic properties of regular butter.

I love to cook with ghee as well as add it to afternoon cacao or matcha lattes. When sourcing a ghee be sure to look for grass fed and organic to really reap the benefits of this ancient superfood.

Dressing up those oats! Super fan of oats in the morning over here. But when it comes to balancing blood sugar only steel cut or rolled will do. Quick oats have been robbed of their nutritional benefits for the sake of convenience. Oats are decent source of soluble fiber which means not only they helpful in blood sugar balance but they can also play a role in cholesterol reduction. The soluble fiber found in oats works to pull bile salts out of rotation. So instead of your liver being able to recycle them, it will pull cholesterol out of your bloodstream to make new bile salts! 💫

I always recommend clients dress up their oats with protein and healthy fats. A few of my favorites are @greatlakeswellness collagen powder, cacao nibs, grass fed butter, nut butter, some dark berry such aronia or blueberries and cinnamon. The addition of the fat and protein will help aid that fiber in stabilizing blood sugar and feeling satiated. In addition, those dark berries and cacao nibs serve up both antioxidants and powerful polyphenols! Great for circulation and blood sugar balance! What’s your favorite way to dress up oats?

A big part of what I do is teach clients how their food can play a functional role in their health issues. This recipes is always a fan favorite! This is a fennel and arugula salad with chicken breast (or thighs). I love this recipe because not only does it whip up fast, it really packs a function nutrition punch! The fennel and arugula both play a key role in pumping up digestion, tonifying, detoxifying as well as nurturing. 🥊

Arugula 🍃
🥗 Member of the brassicas or cruciferous vegetables…heavy detoxer!
🥗 Loaded with vitamins and minerals
🥗 A bitter, helps to increase production of gastric juice supporting digestion
🥗 Anti inflammatory
🥗 High glucosinolate content makes it protective against cancer

Fennel 🍃
🥗 Purifying
🥗 Carminative so 🚫💨
🥗 High in vitamin C, iron, and phytoestrogens

That is an inconclusive list of reason to eat these two powerhouses. But both provide a great way to help boost digestion through food without the use of supplements.

Fennel and Arugula Salad with Chicken
3 tbs lemon juice
3 tbs olive oil
1tsp Dijon mustard
2tbs thinly sliced red onion
1 bulb thinly sliced fennel bulb
2tbs chopped fresh parsley
4 cups arugula
8oz cooked chicken breast or thighs
2 tbs chopped pistachios

1. Mix the lemon juice, olive oil, Dijon. Add the fennel and red onion and toss to coat.
2. Plate out the arugula, top with chicken and lemon juice mixture. Sprinkle chopped pistachios on top and enjoy!

I feel like IBS has become such a catch all diagnosis. Are you feeling like no matter what you eat you feel miserable? The truth is, there is more to the story. Where are my current IBS clients, you know what I mean! By running a few functional tests we can usually peel that onion and find that root cause issue that triggers those annoying symptoms such as gas, bloating, cramping, unpredictable bowels etc. By running stool studies we are able to get a really good snapshot at what is actually going on in the gut.
